Five Laughs

Happy Tuesday, guys! It's been busy round here what with uni and work but we're loving the change in routine (...so far! Ask us again when we're up to our necks in papers and you may get a different response...) It's getting noticeably colder in these parts which is kind of bittersweet - summer is definitely over now but we're sooo ready for autumn with all its charms, so bring it on! Have a great week, and enjoy these five laughs :-)

10 Things to Do in September

September is a month that both of us love. Apart from the fact that it's Vicky's birthday month, it's also a time of new beginnings and fresh starts, crisper days and darker evenings, cosy clothes and comforting food. Here are ten things to tick off on your September to-do list.

1. Get Organised!

Even if you're not heading back to school or uni, you can still use this time to get yourself organised - buy a crisp new agenda if you don't already have one and make a note of your goals, meetings, deadlines, events, etc.

2. Indulge in a Pumpkin Spice Latte

Ok, not everyone likes Pumpkin Spice Lattes (Ali loves them, Vicky hates), but everyone should at least try this cosy, calorific beverage at least once in their lives.

3. Go Apple Picking

Soooo we've actually never been apple picking before. But it just seems like such a wholesome, autumnal thing to do that we simply had to stick it on our list.

4. Make Soup

Homemade soup is infinitely yummier than anything you get from a package, so dedicate at least one September evening to cooking up a hearty batch of your choice.

5. Wear Your Summer Clothes While You Still Can

The first few weeks of September tend to be warm, even hot, so now's the time to squeeze in a few last wearings of your favourite dresses, shorts and sandals before the weather starts to chill. At the same time though, be on the look-out for pieces to:

6. Update Your Wardrobe for Autumn

Cosy knits, bright tights, cute coats, leather boots...autumn fashion really has so much going for it.

7. Visit a Library

Check out your local library and spend some time there soaking up the tranquil atmosphere.

8. Look Forward to Fall TV

September heralds in the new season for old favourite programmes as well as promising new ones. Yay for having your life revolve around a show again :-)

9. Get in Touch With Your Grandparents

The first Sunday after Labour Day is officially National Grandparents Day. Celebrate by getting in touch with yours, whether by phone call, visit, or good old-fashioned letter. They will be absolutely thrilled - guaranteed.

10. Bring Out the Candles

Candles are lovely year-round, but their flickering flames definitely become more magical on cosy autumn evenings.

Thursday Travels: Pisa & Verona

This week's Travels takes us back to Italy; a sunkissed country crammed with culture and charm. Definitely one of our favourites ;-) In between visiting Rome, Florence and Venice (each of which will have their own post in the weeks to come), we made brief stops in Pisa and Verona...too brief to have their own post, so we've combined them. Unfortunately, we didn't take a ton of pictures at either of these stops (we got distracted by gelato in Pisa and clothes-shopping in Verona) but you don't really need hundreds of pics of the Leaning Tower or Juliet's Balcony, do you?!

Now for a little history lesson: Construction on the Leaning Tower first began in 1173, and continued intermittently for hundreds of years after that. The tilting is caused by the unstable foundation on which it's built (the ground was/is too soft), and gradually increased each year until the tower was stabilised about a decade ago. You can actually go in (and up) it, but we didn't...it was the hottest day we'd yet experienced on our trip and we were dying for gelato...so we reserved our flagging energy for the pursuit of acquiring some. (The main difference between gelato and ice cream? Gelato uses milk where ice cream uses cream! And is somehow all the more yummier for that, in our opinion).

{First glimpse!}

{We tried to take a pic of us leaning against/pushing the Tower but after several failed attempts opted for a more basic pose}

{On the prowl for gelato}

{Looks kinda normal from this angle}

Now for Verona... It's a mid-sized city in Northern Italy with an amphitheatre, warm-coloured buildings and sun-dappled streets, and the Casa di Giulietta - Juliet's House. As in Juliet Capulet, heroine of Shakespeare's great tragedy (and Taylor Swift's alter ego).

While there actually was a Capulet family living in Verona, the similarities to the family of the  play are a bit hazy, so the claim that this is the Capulet family home (and that the balcony was indeed Juliet's) is a bit sketch...but nonetheless it's become a love shrine of sorts, complete with letters to Juliet from people around the world posted on the walls.

It was a bit nauseating, what with the overwhelming amount of PDAs going on ever way you looked, so we made a hasty dash for the shops... We found a really good one called ProMod - a cheap and cheerful clothing store indigenous to Europe; definitely recommended!

Five Laughs: Back To School Edition

Hello everyone! We hope you had a fantastic Labour Day weekend :-) Vicky and I were in Vancouver for the weekend, where we soaked up the sunny weather and hit up the shops...It only just dawned on us as we were leaving that the new Topshop there is now open - we were kicking ourselves for forgetting to pay it a visit, as it's the BIGGEST Topshop in North America!!! Another time, another time...
We're back to the books tomorrow, so decided that this week's five laughs should have a Back to School theme...hope you enjoy!
