Oscars 2013

We had high hopes for Oscar Night in terms of dresses, being pretty disappointed with the lacklustre apparel of the Golden Globes, as noted here. We truly hoped that the starlets were simply saving up their style for the biggest event of Awards Season, but sadly, this was not to be, as last night's Red Carpet proved to be pretty underwhelming. There was a plenitude of metallics, whites, and nude tones and few bright colours or risky patterns, so even though we couldn't muster up a Top 5, neither could we condemn any dresses other than Anne Hathaway's as being downright awful. So here are our favourite three looks of the night, and, in our opinion, the only true miss...or Mis, if you prefer! We'd love to hear your thoughts on the night's fashion - which were your favourites/least favourites?

THE HITS...

{Catherine Zeta-Jones in Zuhair Murad}

{Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji}

The Little White Dress

While the Little Black Dress is an undisputed classic, there is nothing as summery and fresh as a white dress for warm days, making the LWD our new favourite wardrobe staple. It can be as simple or as elaborate as you like, and, unlike many summer frocks, it can easily be winterised with a pair of tights. Here are ten favourite styles we've rounded up, and how we'd wear them:

The Little White Dress

1. Peter Pan Collar: If you want something simple, sweet, and a bit offbeat, then this style is for you. Just avoid pairing it with a hairband and Mary-Janes if you don't want to look like an overgrown toddler.

2. Tiered Lace: Unabashedly girly, this look may be too sickly sweet for some. Either toughen it up with leather accessories, or embrace the sugar by teaming with pastels.

3. Body Con: Not for the faint of heart, this style of dress requires a kick-ass pair of heels (preferably neon) and maximum levels of confidence.

4. Monochrome: This chic option begs to be worn with sleek hair and red lipstick. And possibly a pair of amazing yellow shoes.

5. Wrap Around: This dainty number calls for delicate jewellery and pretty ballet flats. Perfect for garden parties and afternoon tea.

6. Grecian: Make like a goddess and pair a simple dress like this with gladiators, a messy chignon, and soft make-up.

7. Peplum: This polished, of-the-moment style would work well for an evening event, worn with classic heels and bright lipstick.

8. Shirt Dress: Offset the structure of this look by wearing with tousled hair, stacks of bangles, and well-worn sandals.

9. Broderie Anglaise: Crisp and feminine, a dress like this is perfect for a day at the beach, along with a floppy sunhat and espadrilles.

10. Waterfall Hem: This style can be dressed down for day, with sandals and loose waves, or up for night, with metallic heels and an elegant chignon.
