Met Gala 2015: Red Carpet Lowdown

Despite the fact that I love a good red carpet (I practically count down the days to the Golden Globes and Oscars each year), the Met Gala has never really registered with me as an event to get excited about. Each year, it'll come and go and I'll give a cursory glance to the fashion of the night and then completely forget about it until it rolls around again. But I felt there was something different and way more outrageous about it this year...and like EVERYONE in Hollywood was there! Why has it never dawned on me that pretty much everyone who's anyone goes to this?! 

With the theme being "China: Through the Looking Glass," there was a definite Oriental vibe to the majority of the night's looks, and the fashion bar was raised to a higher-than-usual standard of WTF-ness. Here are my thoughts...I'd love to hear yours!

MOST WTF (BUT PULLED IT OFF)

{I love Sarah Jessica Parker, so I may be biased, but I thought she totally owned this striking ensemble: a Philip Treacy headdress and SJP x H&M dress. If anyone can pull off a high-drama look with nonchalant ease, it's SJP.}

{Solange Knowles is another favourite style icon of mine, and while this supremely bizarre Giles number would definitely not be everyone's cup of tea, I think she really worked it.}

MOST WTF (IN A MADE-ME-HUNGRY-FOR-AN-OMELETTE WAY)

{I loved the colour of this Guo Pei gown/cloak on Rihanna, I loved her bob and the headpiece, and I thought she had the perfect haughty demeanour necessary to pulling off such a look...but I just felt there was something really off about the fit -- too bulky around the torso or something??}

MOST WTF (IN A DOLLAR-STORE- HALLOWEEN-COSTUME WAY)

{Wow, what a weird dress. Obviously there's the hood, and then there's the fact that it looks so incredibly budget  -- like as if Anne just picked up a random piece of material from the bargain rack at Fabricland and made it herself (it's actually Ralph Lauren)}

TRASHIEST TRIO

{I realise these ladies are never going to be paragons of class and elegance on the red carpet, but do they have to be so OBVIOUS?!}

MOST BORING

{Why bother going to the Met Gala, Reese Witherspoon, if you're just going to wear THIS?!}

{Wouldn't you just love it if Julianne Moore wore something completely outrageous on the red carpet?! Like, just once?? She's always so incredibly staid.}

MOST INTERESTING USE OF COLOUR

{I loved the combination of Lily Aldridge's icy blue dress, mint green earrings and super dark lip. So sleek and crisp.}

MOST DISPARATE SIBSET

{HOW ARE THEY EVEN RELATED?!?!?!?!}

Red Carpet Recap: Oscars 2015

I usually feel a little bit let-down with the fashion on Oscar night, and this year was no exception. There were only a handful of looks that I liked, but, unlike at the Golden Globes (recap here),  none that I felt strongly enough about to condemn to a "Worst" list. What were your thoughts?

Red Carpet Recap: Golden Globes 2015

January to March may be my least favourite stretch of the year, but there is one perk to this otherwise dreary time: Awards Season! I'm not the biggest movie buff (I have yet to see any of the big films nominated this season), but I love love love the Red Carpet coverage. Oscars 2013

We had high hopes for Oscar Night in terms of dresses, being pretty disappointed with the lacklustre apparel of the Golden Globes, as noted here. We truly hoped that the starlets were simply saving up their style for the biggest event of Awards Season, but sadly, this was not to be, as last night's Red Carpet proved to be pretty underwhelming. There was a plenitude of metallics, whites, and nude tones and few bright colours or risky patterns, so even though we couldn't muster up a Top 5, neither could we condemn any dresses other than Anne Hathaway's as being downright awful. So here are our favourite three looks of the night, and, in our opinion, the only true miss...or Mis, if you prefer! We'd love to hear your thoughts on the night's fashion - which were your favourites/least favourites?

Golden Globes 2013: The Good, the Bland, and the Ugly

We love Awards Season for the dose of glitz and glamour it brings to our dreary, sun-starved January selves, and picking our favourite looks from the Golden Globes and Oscar nights is an annual pastime we really look forward to. Last night's event was somewhat disappointing in the style stakes, however. While we unanimously loved Jessica Alba's peachy ensemble, we didn't have such an easy task agreeing on four other favourites to round out our Top Five. Vicky and Claudia loved Nicole Richie's powder blue number, while Ali thought the whole look was a bit too Aladdin-esque; Ali thought Zooey Deschanel looked good, while V & C found her boring. 

Then there were the dresses that nearly had it right except for some dodgy tailoring: Jennifer Lawrence in poppy-coloured Dior, and Jessica Chastain and Rosario Dawson in icy-blue gowns chose the perfect colour but were let down by the terrible fit. Also in the "bland" category were dresses that were, actually, just that - blaaaaaand! - including Julianne Moore's structured black-and-white number and Adele's black dress that we swear we've seen her in at every public appearance she's ever made. Ever. 

Lastly (and by far the easiest category to agree upon) are our Worst Looks, or to put it more gently, our Least Favourites: the poor dresses characterised by an unfortunate combination of hideous colour/print/tailoring.
